And since Diwali is a festival of lights, we wanted to promote RK Pachauri's initiative to donate solar lamps this Diwali," says Chandan Nath, president and head of the ad agency.


Resorts too are taking steps to a green Diwali. Mehul Shah, deputy manager, marketing of a known resort in Gandhinagar says, "There are puppet shows and folk music programmes at the resort. But crackers are a strict 'no'. This is how we ensure a safe and pollution free Diwali."

Not only do institutes and companies are making moves to embrace the green cause, homemakers are also lending their share by making eco-friendly rangolis. Kokilaben Patel, a homemaker, says, "Instead of using the dyes and colours in the market I use organic material which are bio-degradable in my rangoli." And many claim that an organic rangoli serves as a feed to birds and insects such as ants. "It is a beautiful sight to watch birds feasting on grains of rice and pulses during the festival," says Kokilaben.

Schools too encourage the making of an organic rangoli which uses turmeric for yellow colour, orange sindoor, gulal and kumkum for a combination of colours. "Rangoli competitions that encourage the eco-friendly concept are held every year," says Sajla Krishna, a teacher. And a number of permutations and combinations gives rise to novel ideas and a colourful spectacle, is what many say.

Well, the market too, apart from stocking the usual firecracker, has noise free options. Paper crackers that churn out fake currency notes on ignition are an alternative to the fire crackers which are made of inorganic combustible substances like magnesium oxide et al.

At the same time, the virtual world too offers a green alternative in terms of e-crackers. So all you need this Diwali is a nice speaker, an LCD screen attached to the hard disc of your computer and you can go ballistic. And, of course, you have a cause in place — celebrating a green Diwali.
